RIP Anna

Postby khall » Sun Oct 30, 2016 4:21 pm

I had to euthanize my sweet kind Han/TB mare Anna this morning due to an impaction colic that would not resolve. Anna was 16 and I did not want to put her through colic surgery due to her other health issues (HSer and lameness/arthritis). We tried all night with IV fluids and NG tube to medically treat Anna, but this morning she took a turn for the worse showing severe pain and HR of 140. I had to make that difficult call we all as horse people dread. She was euthanized to end her suffering this morning by my long time vet.

Take comfort in your loss knowing that you were with her at the end and you did your best to make her comfortable. It's a hard call none of us wants to make.

Hugs and healing vibes

One of the things that freaked me out the most when Brio was euthanized was not being there. I was actually driving in Dallas traffic when I got the call.

I am glad you were there with her and you got to say a proper goodbye.

Thanks all, for the condolences on the loss of Anna. It did give me comfort that I could be there for her to make the hard decision and to take her pain away. Anna was a very special mare, kind from when she first came into this world. I bred and raised Anna out of my TB mare Cors de Lis. Anna was the last offspring out of Lis who I lost to a fractured leg in 2001 at 19. Out of all Lis' offspring, Anna most reminded me of her. Kind, soft with just the best mind. I started her late because we were in the middle of building a farm, but she never once gave me any issues US. She was a light and easy horse to ride, great to take off the farm. I did have some lameness issues off and on over the years a laminitic episode and some issues LF that had resolved. I had bred her and her filly is the October horse of the month, Joplin a Lusitano X filly coming 3. I had just started back working with Anna these last couple of months in hand and was looking forward to getting back on her. Anna will be missed greatly.

I just looked at your FB picture of Anna. Such a kind sweet face, and her eyes so soft. I understand the Anna size hole in your heart.

Goldhorse, yes, everyhorsman's worst nightmare. Been a rough day today, down to just 6 horses on the farm and 4 that I own. Her pasture mate of 2+ yrs is really missing her, calling and looking for her. I know euthanizing Anna was my only option, but dang it sure does not make the hurt any less. I was really looking forward to getting back on her, she was my kind of ride. Light and soft. I called her my ballerina where my big guy wears combat boots.

Hug your horses for me tonight and give them a cookie. We all know how fragile they can be.

Godspeed to your good mare, khall.

I suspect as Joplin matures, you will find Anna looking out at you. Both my youngsters (who are not so young anymore) have become more and more like their dam as they age in their expression/eyes. It is bittersweet but she left them with a kind eye.
