I've been offered a free truckload of rubber mulch that a guy pulled from his yard. My first thought is, score!, arena footing! But I'm not sure what to do with it. I have an arena that has shredded wood footing over compacted dirt, so not sure rubber is a good addition to that. I have an indoor round pen that is mostly dirt with some sand. I don't really use it, and it needs some work, the dirt has gotten banked and compacted against the walls. I also have an outdoor round pen with mostly sand/a bit of dirt, and an outdoor arena with mix of sand a dirt. The outdoor arena is really big, 130 x 200, so probably one pickup load of rubber would not make a dent.
So now I'm wondering if this stuff is even useful to me? It seemed like such a score lol. Any ideas for this stuff?
Footing bonanza or waste of time?

Indoor round pen. Maybe? Since you say it needs help
Re: Footing bonanza or waste of time?
Two places I believe boarded bought the gargantuan bags of chipped rubber. They loved it. The current place really didn’t buy enough so it really didn’t make a diff, nor do they do the arena with regularity, so it’s not the win it was at the place I am at now.
I don’t know if it’s the same stuff. What guarantees do you have that there is no metal, etc in it?

Why did a guy have a yard full of rubber? Or are you from the UK so the word "yard" means "stable yard"? What kind of rubber is it; old tennis shoes, or tires, or...?

Yard as in lawn around the house, it was used as mulch in his planting beds. Like this stuff https://rubbermulch.com/collections/rub ... andscaping. I thought it would be perfectly useful as an arena footing additive. But now I'm not sure any of my arenas are right for it...

I tried this with the footing from under the swing set at a neighbor's house.
A pick up truck full of crumb rubber makes a pathetically small pile once you shovel it out into the arena.
And it was full of dirt.
Not a success, I would say.

I would be very careful of rubber mulch that wasn't meant for arena footing. It could very well have nails or other metal in it. I'd pass.
