Meet Mikey

Postby chantal » Mon Aug 06, 2018 8:11 pm

Well, I'm in a place I didn't expect to be and I now officially have my own horse for the first time in 30 years. A young horse at that... I was looking for more of a schoolmaster, and one to lease at that but apparently it wasn't in the stars.

So, with out further ado, meet Maestro, aka Mikey. He's a 16.1, 4 yo SWB out of Wild Dance. He's a complete sweetheart with a good brain, the top requirement on my list. The pic is from the video of my first ride on him so just staring to figure him out. Yes we have a long way to go.

Thank you all!!

Baby chestnut club, cool! He is my second baby chestnut but I hope I do a much better job with this one. I was 17 when I got a 3yo OTTB, and well, green horse and young rider, and I don't young rider in the good nationally ranked sense. Yikes! I do get to hang out in the young horse forum now... hee!

And I kinda like his face too, Ponichiwa. :)

He is not bulky at at all and has some growing to do. I don't think he's going to get much taller if at all, maybe an inch. But he will get some breadth in his shoulders and hind end. I'm so excited to see what he will do. I've never ridden such a delightfully forward horse. His stride is like that of a 17.3h horse.

I am completely and totally, I used those words then changed them thinking no one would use them.

He makes my heart go pitter-patter. But I know you all understand. Still just a horse-crazy girl underneath it all.

And to top it off he's just adorable. He loves everyone and everything. His trainer says he goes around to all the other horses and is like, "Hey guys, high five!" Every time he see them. Every horse. He just loves everything. And his goat. We'll see if he has goat separation anxiety...

Ooooh, I wanna see her. I'm sure I've missed pictures of her. I've been somewhat absent dealing with life. But am back!!

I'm loving his brain, it completely sealed the deal.

My instructor of 17 years before I stopped to focus on cycling breeds SWB's just south of Annapolis and he's one of hers. I saw him and had to go look at him.

Thank you, he was a good boy today for our first ride, just us.

Sunshine2Me-I wish I had a place to keep a goat, I hope he isn't having goat withdrawal. They were so cute together. They weren't together all the time, there were lots of horses there but gosh. Too funny! Then again, I've heard about goats...

I think he looks mature in these pics. He looks like such a baby otherwise. He only measures 76 for a blanket (the big QH I was riding was an 80 and the rescue I rode for 2 1/2 years was an 84). He has a lot of filling out to do. He's quite wiggly at times, so curious. Definitely more fine-boned than many of his siblings I've seen. Most of them step-sibs, from his mom. He's finer-boned than his full brother at the farm.

I do like his head... :) His mom did a good job!

I’m not sure I ever posted any pics. Her name is Wild Thyme and I got her in November.

How do I post pics here? My Flickr acct won’t let me in, and my photo bucket account is so buggy, I had to give up.

Ok, I guess that worked.

Sadly, those pics were taken in May/June and we’ve been out of commission since then, with the exception of a lot of tack walking. She had an abscess for two weeks and while that was resolving, we got the results of a Lyme titer back and she was positive. So I started treating with Doxy but after two weeks, I didn’t think it was working (yes I know it takes longer but I’ve treated a lot of horses for Lyme and usually I see some improvement early on), so I sent her to the vet for 2 weeks of IV oxytet. We thought something else might be going on so when that was over I sent her to Tufts for a work up and bone scan, which fortunately just indicated inflammation in the stifles (which we already knew, this confirmed it was not a bigger problem). We just started her rehab yesterday and hopefully that is her last vet bill ever. Oh, except it won’t be because we found ulcers in there somewhere and she will need to be re-scoped. Horses, jeez.

After the winter we just had, all I wanted to do was ride, and all I could do was walk and worry.

Ah Geeze Bip! Pretty girl and man what a time you've had!! I understand about abscesses this year! I've dealt with two nasty buggers in one horse (she actually had a 3rd but never was lame on it) and she is prone to ulcers, ugh. I have her on Alfalfa lox by Triple Crown now trying to keep her from continuing with them. Have not scoped her since starting the Alf lox, kind of afraid to. I hope your girl comes around and you can enjoy her!

Ooooh, seestrah!! Yup, worked great, thank you!! I love her! Looks like you two have fun. What's her barn name? How is she on the XC?

I would love to play with a little bit of jumping and maybe a baby event in the future. I evented in Pony Club and did a lot of jumping as a teenager. Mikey likes to jump so it's in the back of my head and I love a well rounded horse. I think it's really good for them mentally and physically.

And abscesses have been terrible this year at the other barn where I've been riding the past 5 years. :( Jingles for that being the last vet bill!

Well, I was going to call her T but I didn’t tell everybody in time so she goes by Thyme. It suits her. She is not great xcty or jumping in general. She’s good at it, but gets behind the leg and kind of shuts down. However, that could be mostly because of the raging case of Lyme she had for months and months that I didn’t know about. We thought something was up, but I had pulled a titer in February (not my regular vet) and I was told her titer was negative. Her OspF was 2300 Positive, indicating chronic infection. We discovered that in June when I pulled a titer again and it was 2500 Positive, and I called the other vet to see what the exact results were before.

You know what is galling? That clinic had the nerve to send me a reminder card to have my horse’s titer checked! Maybe remind yourselves to give people the right results?!!! And it turns out last year, that same clinic forgot to give the results to another boarder, and her titer was over 25,000. It was the highest ever in New England! (According to Cornell, anyway) And they didn’t even call her!

Anyway, dressage is just so easy for her that might be her calling. We will see what she can do when she’s rehabbed.

I gotta get my bearings. I literally just got him, officially on Monday. It's a been a process to get him, as I'm sure you all know, and now we need to figure out where we both are. When I figure out what our goals are, I'll join in. I want to have fun on the journey and see what we can do.

He's just so stinkin' cute.

Wow congrats Chantal! Gorgeous!
BIP, my mare has been out since may too, with a tendon injury, though. It sucks. We started tack walking in August, hoping to get cleared for trotting in a few weeks. Sounds like you’ve had quite the spring and summer too! Horses, sigh.
