My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
So, this happened today. Fresh off the trailer, still has her shipping boots on.
This is Judy, my new 8 year-old Dutch mare. I'm in love!
Update! Judy has been with us for a little over a month now and has settled in well. Her heat is another story! Like from the bowels of hell. Poor girl was really in distress for a few days just four weeks ago. Monday she had an acupuncture treatment and boy, oh boy, what a difference. She's still a trifle agitated and calling out now and then, but nothing like last month. She'll have another session in a few weeks.
She didn't have much experience in indoor arenas, so that's something we've had to address. She has learned pretty quickly that there's nothing to worry about, at least most of the time. Another issue was walking off at the mounting block, a big no-no in Kathy World. Four or five sessions, working slowly and patiently, and she's standing well. We're still usually turned toward a wall or a fence, but not right up against it, and once or twice we've been successful not facing any obstacle.
This lovely mare has never before had her "own person," so it took her a little while to figure out that I was going to be her person. She loves to be told she's a good girl, and her pushy, bossy behavior is slowly but surely disappearing. I think she likes me, lol.
Annnnnnd, a photo from today, depicting the never-ending struggle to stretch up on my right side.

She was advertised as 16.2. I think she may be bigger. I don't care! I want to go back to the barn and spend the night in her stall, lol.
Re: My announcement -- another redhead!
Congratulations!! New horses are so exciting. Thanks for sharing. Keep us posted on how she settles in and all that stuff

Re: My announcement -- another redhead!
Judy is lovely. I wish you many happy years together. She looks much larger than 16.2.
What’s with all the red heads lately??? Not that there’s anything wrong with that, says the proud owner of a red headed mare.

What a lovely mare, congratulations! Can't wait to hear all about her.
Keep calm and canter on.
Re: My announcement -- another redhead!
Congratulations! She is lovely and certainly looks larger than 16.2 unless you are somewhat vertically challenged.
Looking forward to hearing more about her.

Re: My announcement -- another redhead!
Thank you all for your good wishes. We sticked her and she's 16.3. She had a massage yesterday to help her recover from the 7 hour trip, and today we rode. My trainer rode first, then I got on. She was just lovely. Some of the horses in turnout were behaving like knuckleheads and she was startled, and made a very small spook in place, and then she was pretty much all business.
Over the past two days Judy has shown herself to be sensible, sweet, smart, and brave. I can't believe how lucky I am to have her. She showed successfully at 3rd level (verified on Centerlinescores.com) and schools all the PSG.
I don't know whether Judy's ever been in in indoor, as the sellers go south for the winter and don't have an indoor at the northern barn. I plan to take her into the indoor tomorrow.
She is by Jive Magic, out a Wolkenstein II mare. She was a homebred and, for some reason that we don't know, they never registered her. We only found out at the last minute that she's not registered. The sellers are getting her registered and ownership transferred to me, or will forfeit some of the sale price.
The reason we don't know some things is that the seller just had a baby after a difficult pregnancy, the baby is in the NICU, she is in "the big city" to be near him, and we really don't want to bug her with questions that aren't, in the grand scheme of things, terribly important. She wasn't present when we went to try the mare, but we did speak with her on the phone a few times. I can assure you that the seller, along with her husband, are upper echelon riders whose names you would likely know, and they are 100% reputable.
I was able to buy this mare because she colicked from a twisted gut last year, and had surgery to untwist the gut. No resection or other cutting was needed. They wanted to find for a good home for her, not a high-pressure competition home, and offered her at a very reasonable price, much less than 1/2 of what her price was before she colicked. They know my trainer and trust that the mare will have great care and a loving home.
I am very, very lucky to have her and she is stealing my heart.

She is absolutely beautiful. If I'm correct, she has a full sister a year younger competing at PSG, same owners, doesn't she?
Nice breeding and lovely training on this mare. Congratulations!!!

Re: My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
Looking good Kathy! My goodness, either she is a big girl or you are a small one. That's a lot of horsepower for you.
Yeah, all those tiny issues with new horses. There is always something to work through.
Regarding the indoor, I have a small issue there too. No spooking, but tense in a couple places by doors. The indoor always looks different due to time of day, shadows, etc.

Yes, she is a big girl. I'm not big, but not really tiny, either; just shy of 5'4".

What a lovely mare Judy is! Glad you two are forming a team. Updates will be most welcomed and encouraged
Re: My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
I'm so happy seeing people so happy with their horses. Good for you and good for Judy!
Re: My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
Congrats KathyK! What a lovely elegant chestnut mare!! Love the Wolkenstein II lines! W was one I had thought about breeding to, put good minded athletic offspring on the ground.

Re: My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
Lovely picture. I would never know you needed to stretch your right side. It took Miss A. almost a year to unlearn her pushy behavior. Took a lot of patience on my part, but so worth it. Gotta love the redheads. I'm glad the acupuncture is helping.
Re: My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
you look great on her!

Lovely, elegant horse! I wish you much joy with her!
Re: My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
Love the update. Walking from the mounting is a big no-no in my world too. We've got that down but working on other stuff.
You look lovely on her! I hear you on the stretching down issue...

Lovely riding! you sit really well on her and look well matched
Re: My announcement -- another redhead! Update!
Nice mare! Looks like you'll have a ton of fun with her, happy riding!
I thought of you yesterday as I was pulling on the boots I bought from you to go try out a half lease on another redhead. The horse was lovely so maybe it's a redhead season around here
