I Was Her Human

Postby Tarlo Farm » Thu Nov 07, 2019 10:09 pm

She was my first mare. Bett On Zena. Zena, Warrior Princess. Broodmare Extrodinaire. She claimed me early, resting her jaw on my head or my shoulder, glaring with ears back when others would come close when we were loving on each other. Gently insisting I'd rub her fanny, groom her first and last. She'd tucked her head in my armpit when I'd stroked her face just enough, leaning, blowing gently.
Herd boss. Boss mare. Baby Mamma. See you on the other side my beauty.

Saying goodbye is the hardest thing we do when we welcome animals into our lives. It never gets easier. Godspeed Zena. Hugs to you Tarlo.

You were her everything and she knew it. That matters. We give our hearts to our horses and when they leave us they take it with them. Just saying the words "I'm sorry" is just not enough, but we know we all feel the same.

Thanks everyone. Only a couple people outside of here know and I told them I didn't want to talk about it. The condolences are only bearable here, where I can cry in peace and solitude. Even when you KNOW it's the right thing to do, it's so DAMN awful. I hurt now for Xan and her upcoming trial. With a young horse too. Honestly, it's the worst thing about owning an animal. The worst.

Her grave is in sight, and I planted daffodils on it - the only thing the deer don't eat.
I'm 61, I've owned horses for 54 years, and the youngest of my three remaining horses is 18. I've thought, no more. I can't do this any more.
And then my stupid mind started calculating if I got another one in a few years, about five or six years old, then when I'm in my late 70's and likely not riding, I could give it away to a good kid. So my horse-ownership won't end with putting down my last horse. I am an addict.

You were, you still are, and you always will be. Hugs to you, and glad we all have a place to come share with friends we may never have seen, let alone met, when we just don't have in it us to talk to "real live friends" we see or talk to each day.

Isn't it wonderful to have a place among friends to grieve? In real life non horsey friends don't get it.

I'm an addict too - and while it's going to take time to heal, part of the healing is knowing horses EXIST, in all their wild and wonderful ways. It gives us hope. We can online horse shop together when the time is right!

I'm so sorry your good mare has gone  but she's still with you, a few steps behind with the rest of the invisible herd of horses we collect as time goes by. They follow us forever.
